Vice President Naidu inaugurates Andhra National Highway projects”

Vice president Venkaiah Naidu on Tuesday laid the foundation stone for the first phase of the 2,890-km National Waterway-4 (NW-4) at Amravati in Andhra Pradesh. In the first phase, the 82 km stretch from Muktyala to Vijayawada will be developed.

The Vice President also expressed support to the Rally for Rivers campaign initiated by Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev and his NGO Isha Foundation, and said that interlinking of rivers can solve the problem of drinking water across the nation.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, Andhra Pradesh Governor ESL Narasimhan, Chief Minister N. Chandra Babu Naidu, and other dignitaries will take part in the program. The total cost of the 13 national highway projects launched Tuesday is Rs 4,153 crore. He claimed that the Pattiseema Lift Irrigation Scheme which linked Krishna and Godavari rivers saved Krishna delta from a drought-like situation.

It will also provide connectivity to important tourist and pilgrimage spots by the river.

The inland waterway was declared National Waterway-4 in November, 2008 with a total length of 1,078 km. He added that the Andhra Pradesh government is preparing a detailed project report and it is in the process of acquiring land. However, without explaining much about the progress of works on the actual Polavaram dam, the chief minister sought to divert the attention of the Union minister by showcasing the Pattiseema project.

Visakhapatnam-Chennai industrial corridor is another major project which would benefit the state enormously and it would be taken up expeditiously, he added.

Although the Andhra Pradesh government had promised to complete the Polavaram multipurpose project by June 2018, its timeline has now been reset and it is likely to be completed only by mid-2019.
