Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi assumes command of Pak Navy”

Pakistan's new naval chief Admiral Zafar Mehmood Abbasi on Saturday took command of the navy in Islamabad amid several security challenges facing the country. Wishing Admiral Zafar the best for his journey as the naval chief said that Pakistan was a gift from God and that defending the motherland was dearer to the officers of the navy than their own lives.

"New missile crafts have been inducted to strengthen the defence of country whereas agreements have been signed to acquire frigates from China and planes from Holland along with eight submarines from China", he said.

The President of Pakistan appointed Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi as Chief of the Naval Staff upon completion of tenure of service of Admiral Muhammad Zakaullah.

The outgoing naval chief also said that the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) will propagate peace and prosperity in the region and Pakistan Navy is doing all that it can to safeguard projects related to it. "Our association with Pakistan Navy is a matter of pride". Admiral Zakaullah, who retired, passed the baton of charge to Admiral Zafar Abbasi. The officer undertook initial training at Britannia Royal Naval College Dartmouth, UK. On commissioning, he won the coveted Sword of Honour from Pakistan Naval Academy. He has also served as commandant of the Naval Academy as well as Director General of the Maritime Security Agency.

The change of command ceremony was attended by a large number of civil and military dignitaries, former Naval Chiefs, media representatives, CPOs/Sailors and Navy civilians.
