Kenneka Jenkins case: Autopsy results released in teen's death in freezer

Kenneka Jenkins case: Autopsy results released in teen's death in freezer”

Jenkins, a Chicago native, was found dead September 10 - almost a day after she'd gone missing at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

Authorities early on suspected Jenkins mistakenly walked into the freezer by accident. An "abrasion on her right ankle and a purple contusion on her right leg" was also found. The amount of the drug in her system was in the "therapeutic range", the coroner's office said. Alcohol, caffeine, and the migraine medication topiramate were deemed "significant contributing factors" to her passing, the statement reads.

Toxicology reports found that Jenkins had a blood-alcohol level of 0.112, above the 0.08 legally permissible to drive. When combined, the effect of either or both drugs is enhanced.

The local medical examiner's office has conducted its own autopsy, but results have not been made public.

Friday afternoon, a spokesman for Rosemont police said Jenkins' is still being treated as "an ongoing death investigation" and not a criminal matter.

Additionally, Martin's attorneys say that though they've been provided most security footage they've requested, no footage from two other cameras has been given to them.

"The investigator found Ms. Jenkins lying face down in a walk-in freezer that is inside of a walk-in refrigerated cooler". At the time of the inspection, the cooler's thermometer indicated a temperature of 40 degrees Fahrenheit, and the freezer's thermometer indicated a temperature of 10 degrees Fahrenheit, the office said. The inside of the freezer door was equipped with a circular release mechanism, the office said. She filled out a police report and Jenkins' sister reported her missing. There is a light switch outside of the cooler door, the office said.

Rosemont police have released nine video clips showing Jenkins walking through the hotel in the hours before her death.

Citing the police investigation, the medical examiner said there's no evidence Jenkins was forced to consume the alcohol or the drug.

The autopsy found no evidence of an altercation with someone else before her death and no evidence of trauma due to abuse.

Hotel management did not immediately return calls seeking comment.

In the days and weeks after her death, Twitter and Facebook were flooded with conspiracy theories about how Jenkins had died, with some speculating that she was murdered in the freezer and her organs were harvested.

Attorneys for the mother of Kenneka Jenkins also filed an emergency petition to preserve all surveillance recordings taken within a Rosemont hotel from before the time in which the woman was found dead in an unused freezer last month. She can be seen walking unsteadily through the hotel's kitchen before disappearing around a corner, but none of the released footage shows her entering the freezer.

The case prompted protests from demonstrators who converged on the hotel, stirred by the odd circumstances of the death and Martin's complaints about the initial response from hotel staff and police.
