Hundreds of protesters march to Kenyan election board headquarters

Hundreds of protesters march to Kenyan election board headquarters”

A police crackdown during three days of protests following the 8 August polls killed at least 37 people, the government-backed Kenya National Commission on Human Rights said in a report released on Monday.

Seven of those killed were under the age of 18 and included a six-month-old baby who died after being beaten by police who broke into her home during late night demonstrations in the western city of Kisumu, an opposition stronghold.

Nearly all of the dead were killed in western Kenya or the slums of the capital Nairobi, both strongholds of opposition leader Raila Odinga and his Luo ethnic community.

In August, Fred Matiangi, acting interior minister, denied security services used live bullets or excessive force in dealing with protesters and blamed the violence on "criminal elements".

Odinga has vowed to boycott the polls if his demands, such as the overhauling of the election commission, are not met.

"It is my democratic right not to participate in a pre-rigged election", Odinga told journalists. The court said mass irregularities and illegalities took place during the voting, recording, and transmission of results.

Speaking during a meeting with a section of political leaders drawn from Coast Region at Serani Grounds in Mombasa County, the Head of State said that Kenyans have become disillusioned by the prolonged political period and castigated the NASA leader for what he termed as "holding the country back".

"We know that we won the August 8 election fairly and that is why we are ready for the October 26 election", President Kenyatta said.

Police shot in the air and use tear gas to disperse crowds that had gathered at Uhuru Park in Nairobi to contain a section of the protesters who were throwing stones at them.

Rallies were also reported in several other cities.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has claimed Opposition leader Raila Odinga wants to withdraw from October 26 repeat presidential race in order to cause anarchy.
