Catalan leader faces mounting pressure from all sides”

On Tuesday, Puigdemont told regional lawmakers in a speech that Catalonia was proceeding with a declaration of independence from a mandate provided by an October 1 referendum.

An influential grassroots separatist group has joined voices in Catalonia urging the regional president to ignore warnings from Spain's central government and definitively declare independence. Spain's government and the European Union, on the other hand, want him to abandon the secession plans altogether.

Rajoy accused Puigdemont of creating "deliberate confusion" and said that the Spanish government needed to know whether or not he had declared the northeastern region independent from Spain, BBC reported.

"If there were no quick solution to this issue we should be forced to lower expectations of economic growth for the year 2018", Soraya Sainz de Santamaria said on Friday.

In addition to pressure from Spain, two key allies of Puigdemont's government called on him to ignore the Spanish government's threats and press ahead with proclaiming a new republic.

Spain's Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy on Wednesday said he has asked Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont to confirm whether or not he has declared independence. The prime minister said the government is exploring whether to resort to Article 155 of the constitution, which allows abolition of Catalonia's self-government.

The former president of Generalitat Artur Mas has warned that neir CUP nor ANC chair Govern and that one who has to decide how he responds to requirement of central government is president of Generalitat, Carles Puigdemont. He had said that Catalonia was proceeding with a declaration of independence, but proposed freezing its implementation for a few weeks to allow for dialogue and mediation with Spain's government.

Addressing the Catalan Parliament in Barcelona on Tuesday evening, Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont said: "We call on global states and organisations to recognise the Catalan republic as an independent and sovereign state".

"It doesn't make sense to keep the suspension of the independence declaration" given Madrid's rejection of any dialogue, ANC said in the statement.

Years of growing separatist sentiment erupted on October 1 when Catalan leaders held the banned referendum despite court rulings and fierce opposition from Spain. "I do not want that", Jean Claude Juncker said in a speech at Luxembourg University.

The European Union, the United States and most other world powers have made it clear they wanted Catalonia to remain within Spain.
