Kenya: Police Alert as Nasa Vows to Defy Matiangi Ban on Demos

Kenya: Police Alert as Nasa Vows to Defy Matiangi Ban on Demos”

In Nairobi riot police were deployed ahead of expected protests.

According to reports, police in Kenya fired teargas at angry opposition supporters who are unhappy at a new election law which says if one candidate withdraws, the other automatically wins the presidency- meaning a walk over victory for Kenyatta, in the re-run of the election later this month.

In an exclusive interview with Citizen TV, the opposition leader, who is now in London, United Kingdom, maintained that he will not participate in the repeat presidential race.

Supporters of opposition leader Raila Odinga have been holding regular demonstrations in Mombasa, Kisumu, and the capital Nairobi to push for election reforms before the October 26 re-run of Kenya's presidential election.

"One of them has a large injury on the head and another on the chest".

Election officials have been locked in crisis meetings since the decision, as debate raged over what Odinga's move could mean for a dramatic election saga that saw President Uhuru Kenyatta's August 8 victory annulled by the Supreme Court.

President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya confirmed Friday that he had received the controversial election amendment bill from Parliament, saying he will consider before signing it into law.

Odinga has argued that his withdrawal from the race forces the IEBC to cancel the election and begin the whole process from scratch - allowing more time for his reforms.

But the IEBC appears to be pushing forward with plans for the vote, saying only that Odinga had yet to submit the required form to officially pull out of the race.

National Super Alliance (NASA) has opposed these laws and threatened to seek the intervention of the courts to stop them from coming into effect. A separate healthworker at the same hospital, speaking on condition of anonymity, said eight people had been admitted "with gunshot wounds". However the country still has grim memories of the perils of post-election violence, with a disputed 2007 poll sparking politically-motivated tribal clashes that left some 1,100 dead. Doctor Juliana Otieno at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Hospital - named for Odinga's father - said three patients had been admitted with gunshot wounds.
