Tim's 'T' celebration is a plane for Federation Internationale de Football Association

Tim's 'T' celebration is a plane for Federation Internationale de Football Association”

The world's governing body of football is investigating Socceroos star Tim Cahill for his goal celebration following his decisive match victor in their World Cup qualifier playoff against Syria on Tuesday.

The FFA says it has not been contacted about the matter.

Football's governing body confirmed on Friday that it is investigating whether Cahill, 37, breached sponsorship rules when he celebrated his extra-time victor, his second goal of the match, by making a "T" with his arms in Tuesday night clash, reports Xinhua news agency.

It later emerged that Cahill is an ambassador for travel company TripADeal, who thanked the midfielder for his celebration in an Instagram post after the game.

However, when he put the Socceroos 2-1 ahead in extra-time in Sydney he crossed his hands above his head.

Australia's football association will not take action against Tim Cahill after it was claimed he used a goal celebration to promote a sponsor.

Federation Internationale de Football Association released a statement saying they will be looking into the incident.

Players have been sanctioned by the governing body in the past for advertising unsanctioned brands during games.

Should Cahill be found guilty he could face a fine or even a ban, ruling him out of at least one of Australia's Intercontinental World Cup qualifying play-off matches against Honduras next month.

In 2012, Danish striker Niklas Bendtner was fined $100,000 dollars for exposing underwear made by one of his personal sponsors when celebrating a goal in worldwide competition.

It's not the first time Cahill's goal celebration's have landed him in hot water. While playing with Everton, Cahill celebrated with a handcuff gesture after his brother was arrested by police in England and sentenced to six years in jail for kicking a man outside a taxi rank in London.
