UNC receives report from NCAA on academic scandal”

The NCAA on Friday said it "could not conclude" whether the University of North Carolina violated NCAA rules over a series of academically deficient "paper courses" taken by a sizable number of student athletes over the course of almost two decades. The NCAA ruled that the classes did not violate its policies, though.

The courses were allegedly created to keep student-athletes eligible.

In a 2014 investigation, former U.S. Justice Department official Kenneth Wainstein estimated more than 3,100 students were affected between 1993 and 2011, with athletes across numerous sports making up roughly half the enrollments.

Ultimately, that defense stood up.

While UNC argued that the bogus classes were not a violation of NCAA bylaws, the NCAA argued that the availability of the classes to student-athletes were akin to impermissible benefits. At their most severe, the penalties that UNC is facing could include postseason bans and the vacation of victories, including championships.

The independent study-style courses came in the Department of African and Afro-American studies and often required no attendance, grade changes, forged faculty signatures and just one paper at the conclusion of the semester. Athletics academics counselors and football coaches held a meeting in which a PowerPoint presentation explained the importance of the African and Afro-American studies classes in keeping football players academically eligible.

The report has been the subject of controversy for the university for some time.

The school met with the NCAA Committee on Infractions in Nashville, August to answer for allegations made against widespread academic fraud. They were identified as lecture classes, but the classes didn't actually meet.

In addition to the allegations brought by the enforcement staff, the panel also considered whether academic fraud violations occurred due to the nature of the case, the university's initial adoption of its accrediting agency's characterization of academic fraud and the information uncovered in the outside Cadwalader investigation. They contend that this is a school issue, one that should be handled by its accreditation agency - they already hit the school with a year of probation. "And that's just the best way to put it". Were there some things I wish hadn't happened?

Some assumed the NCAA wouldn't tackle this issue because some version of that occurs at all schools, although it has never been publicly brought to light like at North Carolina. The team's 2005 and 2009 title banners will remain as well.
