England hospitals to ban 'super-sized' chocolate bars

England hospitals to ban 'super-sized' chocolate bars”

In a bid to ensure that patients have a thoroughly miserable time in hospital, NHS chief executive Simon Stevens has made a decision to ban super-size bars of chocolate.

"If the NHS wants to be seen to take obesity and its associated diseases seriously it needs to do a lot more than simply stop selling large chocolate bars".

Simon Stevens, NHS England's chief executive, said: "The NHS is now stepping up action to combat the "super-size" snack culture which is causing an epidemic of obesity, preventable diabetes, tooth decay, heart disease and cancer".

Some 80% of drinks must also have less than 5g of added sugar per 100ml.

And it isn't just patients that health chiefs are concerned about.

The aim is to replace the calorie-laden, sugary snacks that are now available in hospitals with healthier foods. Nearly 700,000 NHS employees out of 1.3million are thought to be classified as overweight or obese.

Sandwiches must contain no more than 400 calories under restrictions that would rule out options such as an M&S BLT or a Pret a Manger cheese and pickle.

Public Health England says the role hospitals play in tackling obesity should not just be treating those who suffer its consequences; they should also be helping to prevent obesity in the first place.

But he suggested the NHS should introduce "more draconian measures" if levels of obesity continue to rise, banning all sugary foods with more than 250 calories, rather than 80 per cent of them.

"Any plans to offer healthier food are a positive step towards tackling the country's obesity problem".

NHS premises have huge footfall from the communities they serve, with one million patients every 24 hours.

Andrew Roberts, from the Royal Voluntary Service, said that in the first quarter of 2017 its outlets had seen year-on-year sales of fruit increase by 25 per cent and healthier chilled snacks like salad and sushi by 55 per cent.

"We took an early lead on the NHS workforce healthy agenda by introducing our Healthier Choices programme and it is already having a significant effect on consumer behaviour".
