Facebook acquires anonymous polling app targeted at teens

Facebook has acquired the anonymous social networking app tbh for an undisclosed amount, and intends to continue to operate it as a standalone app.

Facebook confirmed the acquisition saying, "tbh and Facebook share a common goal - of building community and enabling people to share in ways that bring us closer together".

While the majority of online destinations are known for various degrees of toxic behavior, the app tbh aims to be different.

The app, an acronym for "To be Honest", allows users to anonymously answer multiple choice questions about friends, who then receive the poll results as compliments. Though new and still with limited availability, the app has proven highly popular. TBH was launched on August 3 and already has more than five million users who have sent more than a billion messages - and for now is only available for iPhones, and only in some USA states.

Over 5 million people have downloaded the app and sent over a billion messages in the past few weeks, tbh said on Monday.

Still, it's unusual for Facebook to take interest in an app that promotes anonymous activity. In what way Facebook may alter the app wasn't stated, though it is probably safe to assume that it will rollout to more high schools around the nation at a clipped rate with Facebook's backing.
