US Airstrikes Kill Dozens of IS Fighters in Yemen”

USA forces conducted airstrikes against two ISIS training camps in Yemen on Monday, killing dozens of ISIS fighters and "disrupting the organization's attempts to train new fighters", according to a statement released by the Pentagon.

The Pentagon says IS used the camps to train militants to carry out terror attacks with machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades, and also subjected the fighters to endurance training.

The United States also considers the Yemen-based al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) to be the militant group's most risky branch.

This is the first time security sources loyal to Yemen's internationally recognized government have announced raids against ISIS footholds.

AQAP and IS have flourished in the chaos of the country's civil war, which pits the Saudi-backed government of President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi against Houthi rebels. That power vacuum led to a resurgence by AQAP and the emergence of ISIS in Yemen.

Daesh has used ungoverned spaces of Yemen to plot, direct, instigate, supply and recruit for attacks against America and its allies around the world, the statement said, adding Yemen has been a hub for terrorist recruiting, training and transit for years.

The ISIS camps in Al Bayda Governorate, Yemen disrupted the organization's attempts to train new fighters, the Defense Department said in a statement.

The U.S. has no combat troops in Yemen but has periodically conducted airstrikes to attack militants, including fighters of al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula.
