MNS activists drive away illegal hawkers from railway bridge

MNS activists drive away illegal hawkers from railway bridge”

MUMBAI: The Congress and the NCP slammed the MNS for forcibly evicting illegal hawkers from a railway bridge and claimed that CM Devendra Fadnavis was "hand-in-gloves" with the Raj Thackeray-led party. Earlier, the MNS had given 15 days ultimatum to the government to clear the congestion at railway stations, failing which, the party had said that it will take matters into its own hand.

In the morning, MNS party activists led by Thane city unit president Avinash Jadhav and the party's local youth wing chief Sandeep Panchange, assembled at the station and threw away the stocks of the hawkers, who were at the station premises and foot-over-bridge.

The incident in Thane, which was caught on camera, came a fortnight after the MNS warned that it would unilaterally act against such hawkers if the municipal authorities do not evict hawkers outside the stations and on the foot-over bridges.

"A case of rioting and vandalism has been registered against the accused in three different police stations in Thane city and we have identified the accused, who would be arrested soon", said Sukhada Narkar, Thane police spokesperson. Another officer said that heavy police bandobast has been deployed at various points outside the railway station to prevent such untoward incidents.

After creating ruckus in Thane, MNS workers also evicted hawkers outside the Kalyan station, IBN Lokmat reported.

On October 5, party chief Raj Thackeray had set a 15-day deadline to the Railways to clear the illegal stalls. This was evident today, as MNS workers in Mumbai vandalized stalls of hawkers in Thane and Kalyan.

Mr. Nirupam said the government had failed to enforce the Street Vendors Act, which seeks to protect hawkers. "Had they enforced it, there would have been a survey done and illegal street vendors would have automatically been evicted by law". However, the Chief Minister is protecting goondaism. No police action has been taken since no formal complaint has been filed against the MNS workers. "What Raj Thackeray's party workers did can be analysed later. Was responsibility fixed on those responsible", the Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council questioned.
