Insurer Offers Apple Watch For $25…But With A Catch

The Apple Watch Series 3 can now be had for just the low, low price of $25 - but that price comes with a caveat.

Participants of Vitality, a health-rewards program in use by both insurers, will receive an Apple Watch Series 1, Apple Watch Series 3 with Global Positioning System or Apple Watch Series 3 with Global Positioning System and Cellular device.

Technically John Hancock is offering the watch via a two-year payment plan split into 24 monthly installments.

It is the same size and shape as previous Apple Watch series, but Apple has crammed even more hardware features into the Series 3, offering longer battery life and more sensors for accurate reading of your daily activities. "The more Vitality Points you earn, the less you'll pay". After the company saw a 20% increase in activity from those using the Apple Watch, it chose to offer the wearable to all members of its Vitality program. Talking about this, the company's VP of Marketing and Strategy Brooks Tingle said, "Apple Watch appears to inspire increases in physical activity across all our customers".

About half of them are paying $0 each month (i.e. fully funding their watch) by achieving their monthly activity goals. Instead of an Apple Watch Series 3, they can opt for a free Fitbit device instead, since Apple's smartwatches don't work with Android smartphones. The more they sweat and grunt, the less they have to pay for their Apple Watch Series 3. Previously, the life insurer offered the Apple Watch only to people with insurance policies worth $2 million or higher.

John Hancock and Manulife Vitality, launched in 2015 and 2016, respectively, enable customers to earn savings on premiums while earning discounts on healthy food purchases, entertainment and travel.

Tal Gilbert, CEO of Vitality group United States of America, added, "The data from U.S. Apple Watch users is encouraging". John Hancock, though, says it has unspecified "safeguards" in place to protect that privacy, particularly from threats such as employers who might want to punish their employees.
