Nicaragua Joins Paris Climate Accord, US and Syria Only Nations Left Out”

Nicaragua has become the latest country to agree to the Paris climate agreement, leaving the United States even more isolated.

In September, President Daniel Ortega announced during a private meeting with World Bank directors that his country would join the agreement, although this information was later removed from the official government website.

The government of President Daniel Ortega said the global 2015 pact represented "the only worldwide instrument that offers the conditions to face global warming and its effects", according to a statement read out by Vice President Rosario Murillo.

The agreement, secured in the French capital in December 2015, commits countries to holding global temperature rises to "well below" 2C above pre-industrial levels, requiring emissions to be cut to net zero by the second half of the century.

Syria's civil war is thought to have kept it from signing the deal. Former United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said on Monday that Trump was "standing on the wrong side of history".

U.S. President Donald Trump in June announced the start of a three-year process to pull out of the agreement on the grounds that it would put the U.S.at an economic disadvantage.

Adopted by almost 200 countries during a conference in Paris in December 2015, the document lays out a 31-page plan that seeks to keep global average temperature rise to below 2 degrees Celsius, limit greenhouse gas emissions and also remove them from the atmosphere.

Andrew Light, a senior fellow at the World Resources Institute and a senior climate adviser at the State Department under Barack Obama, told The Washington Post that Nicaragua's decision is "further demonstration that the administration is isolated on this issue".

For example, climate change mitigation action can bring co-benefits for adaptation and sustainable development; renewables can increase access to electricity as well as reduce emissions and more efficient and sustainable agriculture and forestry can contribute to adaptation too.
