Rock and roll legend Fats Domino dies”

Antoine "Fats" Domino, a lifelong New Orleanian and music legend, died Tuesday.

The performer has died at the age of 89, the Associated Press reported on Wednesday. "So they were mixing alcohol, plus dancing, plus the races together for the first time in a lot of these places". Suddenly, the New Orleans sound became popular nationwide.

His first hit, The Fat Man (1949), is sometimes cited by music historians as one of the first rock "n" roll records because of its "brash young street corner attitude, an exuberant vocal veering into nonsense syllables and a supremely throbbing backbeat". He is best known for his singles "Ain't That A Shame", a 1956 original Domino tune which was his first Top 10 single, and "Blueberry Hill", a "40s jazz tune Domino revamped with a rock treatment".

In 1957, he had 11 hits on Billboard's pop chart.

In honor of his enormous influence to music, the portly piano-playing prodigy was honored with an induction into the Rock "n" Roll Hall of Fame in 1986, and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1987. He sold more than 110 million records in his career. The rock and roll pioneer was in the original class inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the likes of Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis. Beatles co-founder John Lennon and Paul McCartney recorded Domino songs.

In the late 1950s, Domino spread his wings and appeared in two films - Shake, Rattle and Roll and The Girl Can't Help It. (1957) and The Big Beat (1958).

Born Antoine Dominique Domino Jr., on February 26, 1928, in New Orleans' Lower 9th Ward, Domino started in the music scene at a young age, dropping out of high school and playing in local bars.

Domino left school at the age of 14 to work in a bedspring factory by day, and play in bars by night. But Domino quickly eclipsed his fellow band members, becoming a sensation all his own.

Domino was a longtime resident of New Orleans' Ninth Ward - the section of the city hit hardest by Katrina's floodwaters - and had resisted early pleas to evacuate as the hurricane approached.
