House of Cards, molto più che una serie tv di successo, ha oscurato perfino le credenziali di grande interprete drammatico a teatro di Spacey, che per una decina di anni ha lasciato Hollywood per dirigere l'Old Vic Theatre a Londra.

In un articolo di BuzzFeed pubblicato domenica, l'attore Anthony Rapp aveva sostenuto di aver ricevuto avance sessuali dalla star di Netflix, allora ventiseienne, quando aveva solo quattordici anni. Spacey, secondo Fowler, tentava di isolarsi e di sfuggire alle "attenzioni" del padre.

Secondo la sua testimonianza, la madre era a conoscenza di quanto accadeva e non avrebbe fatto nulla sino a quando nel 1964 non emerse che il capofamiglia aveva abusato anche di una parente minore: "allorà finalmente si indignò". Kevin Spacey ha dichiarato di non ricordarsi minimamente le molestie perpetrate nei confronti di Anthony Rapp e si è pubblicamente scusato con l'attore ed i suoi fan. Eppure è stato comunicato da Netflix, e precedentemente ipotizzato da fonti non ufficiali, che la scelta era antecedente lo scandalo di mesi. Il regista, David Fincher, ha vinto un Emmy nel 2013 e la serie ha ottenuto diversi Creative Arts Emmys, Golden Globes e Screen Actors Guild Awards.
