Young jump rope champion struck, killed by auto in New Jersey

Young jump rope champion struck, killed by auto in New Jersey”

Jeremiah "Jerry" Grant, who was a member of the renowned double Dutch jump roping team the Honey Bees, was rushed to a nearby medical center after the incident Saturday, but it was too late, NBC 4 NY reports.

Now, the troupe is grappling with the loss of the little boy, who was also affectionately called the "Prince Bee".

"We all stopped at the corner and Jerry heard "go" from another jumper and ran in the street", Honey Bees founder Takeria Clark told The Jersey Journal. "It hit him so hard".

Police say the Jeep's 60-year-old driver drove off until witnesses flagged him down.

People reports Jeremiah had been walking home from a fundraiser with a few other members of the group when he was struck. Although the boy was rushed to Jersey City Medical Center, he died the next day.

According to witnesses, the driver at first pulled off in an attempt to get away, but several Good Samaritans were able to catch up to him by running after him.

'I jumped on the street, went after the auto. "He said he thought he went over a book bag. He didn't notice that he had hit a person". The champion double-dutch roping group once appeared on Fallon's show. They are not characterizing the incident as a hit-and-run, and no charges have yet been filed.

A YouCaring has been set up for Grant and his family - $3,250 has been raised with $20,000 being the ultimate goal.
