Brendan Rodgers explains failure to do this cost him the Liverpool job”

The specific wound the now-Celtic manager made a decision to re-open recently in an interview with one of those newspapers you use to clean up after your dog (don't give 'em your click) was regarding Liverpool's failed attempt that fateful summer to get as close to a like-for-like El Pistelero replacement as one could find in Barcelona's Alexis Sanchez.

In the 2013/14 season, Luis Suarez scored 31 goals in the Premier League and nearly helped Liverpool win the league title for the first time in over two decades.

Rodgers has revealed his regret for not being able to convince the Gunners star to sign for Liverpool.

He was sacked in October 2015 and replaced by Jurgen Klopp.

Suarez left for Barca in a £75m deal and Liverpool turned their attention to Sanchez, but the Chile global instead opted for Arsenal and the Merseyside outfit had to settle for one of their back-up choices at half the price.

The Reds came close to landing the ex-Barcelona winger in 2014 after lining him up as a replacement for the departing Luis Suarez, but they were beaten to the punch by Arsenal.

Liverpool finished sixth that season and Rodgers failed to produce an upturn in form at the start of the following campaign.

"We felt like Luis was going to move on and we needed to get a world-class operator to go like-for-like", he said.

"We finished second in the league playing a great level of football".

There's no point dwelling on what could have been as it only leads to old wounds being opened up especially with the likes of Philippe Coutinho coming to the fore in recent seasons.
