Mourinho: Tax case closed

Mourinho: Tax case closed”

JOSE MOURINHO left a Madrid court saying the "case is closed" after paying a fee to settle the charges of £2.9million tax fraud brought against him.

ESPN report United's players have been told they may have to train later than usual on Friday - which is likely due to Mourinho jetting back from Spain to oversee the session in the afternoon.

"There was no debate or argument, the sum has been paid and the signatures are there that everything is in compliance and the case is now closed - which is why I am here". "For this reason I was here only for five minutes to say the same things I am telling you". "I have nothing more to say".

The Spanish authorities began a case against Mourinho in June, and he was summoned to appear in court in Madrid two days before his Manchester United side visit Chelsea in the Premier League.

Mourinho is the latest figure to be targeted by tax authorities in Spain.

The 54-year-old Portuguese coach was in charge of Real Madrid from 2010-2013.

The authorities allege that the two used tax havens in Belize and Uruguay to hide earnings from image rights.

During his court appearance, Mourinho only answered questions from his lawyer and refused to take questions from public prosecutors, a court spokesman told AFP, adding that the Portuguese remains under official investigation.

Media consortium European Investigative Collaborations (EIC) has claimed that no less than 185 million euros worth of income escaped the attention of tax authorities through the use of shell companies and offshore accounts. Similar cases have been brought against footballers in Spain, among them a number of clients of the agent Jorge Mendes, including Fabio Coentrao, Pepe, Falco, Angel María and, most notably, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Mourinho responded by issuing a statement insisting that his taxes had been paid in full.

The judge chose to call Mourinho after the financial crimes section of the Madrid prosecutor's office accused him of defrauding $3.8 million from his personality rights.
