Class action lawsuit filed against colleges

Class action lawsuit filed against colleges”

Striking members of Ontario Public Service Employees Union Local 110 picket outside of Fanshawe College's Centre for Digital and Performing Arts in London, October 24, 2017.

Meanwhile, in Ottawa, the Algonquin Students' Association launched a $20,000 media campaign urging their teachers to vote in favour of the latest offer from the College Employer Council - because at this point, they say, it's the fastest way to end the strike.

A proposed class action lawsuit has been filed against Ontario's 24 colleges over the strike by 12,000 faculty.

The union has recommended its members reject the offer.

"I will work with students and colleges starting immediately to develop the parameters of the fund".

At Queen's Park, post-secondary Minister Deb Matthews said the government has to let the process unfold, and in any case is "very limited in what we can do".

"There was movement. We worked diligently to come up with a resolution, and we could have ultimately been back in the classroom", she says. "You have to meet a certain threshold and we're not there". It seeks full refunds for students who choose not to continue with their programs and refunds "equivalent to the value of the lost instruction" for students who do want to continue.

The colleges offer, tabled November 6, includes a 7.75 per cent salary increase over four years, improved benefits and measures to address concerns about the use of part-time faculty.

The chair of the colleges' bargaining team said all major issues in the offer have been agreed on by both sides except for language surrounding academic freedom.

"We addressed all faculty priorities and the offer that is available for faculty right now - on the table - should have ended this strike", Del Missier said at the time.

The electronic vote began Tuesday morning and will wrap up Thursday at 10 a.m.
