Haas powers No. 19 Purdue past Marquette in Gavitt Games

Haas powers No. 19 Purdue past Marquette in Gavitt Games”

Purdue (2-0) will face its first real test of the season Tuesday as it plays at Marquette (1-0) in the Gavitt Tipoff Games series. Purdue shot 57% from the field and 33% from three. Purdue started the game 0-of-7 from 3-point range, but finished 4-of-5. Marquette had just four points in the paint in the second half.

Carsen Edwards shook off a hard first half - he committed four of Purdue's eight turnovers in the first 20 minutes - to play an excellent second.

Both squads relied on shots from beyond the arc in their season openers, as Marquette attempted 21 while Purdue had 19. Thompson had zero turnovers in 35 minutes.it marked the seventh time in his career he has played at least 30 minutes with zero turnovers. he now has zero or one turnovers in 88-of-103 career games.

Mathias' three-pointer - more than 27 minutes into the game - was Purdue's first of the game and triggered a stretch where the Boilermakers could do virtually no wrong offensively, pushing their lead back into double-figures and keeping it there by simply outscoring the Golden Eagles. Purdue is 17-3 all-time when he scores 10 or more points. The 7-foot-2 center is going to be a mismatch, no matter who is defending him. Have the big man find open shooters when the defense collapsed on him.

Following Purdue's 86-71 victory over Marquette on Tuesday night, Dakota Mathias was asked what allowed the Boilers to turn a one-possession halftime lead into a 15-point win.

On a night where Vincent Edwards got in early foul trouble then fouled soon after coming back in nearly every time - and he still nearly recorded a double-double (10 points, eight rebounds) in just 16 minutes - and Haas and Mathias battled modest foul problems themselves, Purdue displayed its balance. The Boilermakers most recently started 3-0 in 2015-16, when they began the season 11-0.

"People always talk about experience, but I think what's more important than that is the experience of having success together", Painter said at Big Ten Media Day. "When they did come and double, he did a good job of passing it up". Guard Andrew Rowsey scored 23 points and added 5 assists in the win. Marquette led the nation in 3-point shooting percentage last year and featured the nation's highest percentage 3-point shooter in Markus Howard (54.7 percent last year). But the Boilermakers were tough to stop after they started complementing their inside game with outside shooting.

"After (Mathias' three), we kind of picked them apart after that", Haas said. "Our backside help was something that wasn't really there tonight, " Howard said. "We need him to be disciplined". Carsen Edwards' 19-footer from the corner gave Purdue a 13-point lead with 6:45 left. Last year, Wojciechowski and the Golden Eagles went 19-13 overall and 10-8 in the Big East. Marquette received a No. 10 seed into the NCAA Tournament, losing to eventual Final Four participant SC, 93-73, in the First Round. "When you have an advantage with your height and size, and you have skill level, (opponents are) in a predicament, " Painter said. Marquette: Coach Steve Wojciechowski's team can pile up points quickly in bunches, as evidenced by an 11-2 run over the final 2:41 of the first half to narrow an 11-point gap. Haas' run combined with the small 3-point barrage all but sealed the game for Purdue who fended off a late charge from the Golden Eagles.
