United States trade commission launches probe into Apple over alleged patent infringement”

In October, Aqua Connect and Strategic filed their complaint with the ITC, alleging that Apple was infringing U.S. patent numbers RE46,386 and 8,924,502. In October, both Aqua Connect and its subsidiary Strategic Technology filed a patent lawsuit against the iPhone maker with the ITC and the District Court for the Central District of California. They claim Apple's computers and phones are violating their intellectual property and asked the USITC to block the sale of the devices until the infringement is ended.

According to the company's website, Aqua Connect offers software that allows organizations to deliver macOS as a remote desktop service to users on any device.

The complainant said Apple cut ties with it "abruptly and without explanation" and then, months later, launched its Lion operating system that featured a similar screen-sharing tool.

In its complaint, the remote desktop company said that for many years no one could overcome barriers that stopped the remote control of computers on Macs, but in 2008 the company's chief technology officer, Joseph Cohen, invented a solution and secured patent protection for these inventions. Details regarding the probe are sparse at his point, but the commission alleges the infringement applies to a multitude of Apple products...

The complaint added: "Accordingly, consumers would have access to competitive products from complainants and from other suppliers".

The ITC hasn't made any decisions about the merit of Aqua Connect's complaints, and the case hasn't been assigned to a judge yet. Sign up to our free daily newsletters and get stories like this sent straight to your inbox.
