'We're like brothers': Retired Marine keeps promise made in bunker in Vietnam

'We're like brothers': Retired Marine keeps promise made in bunker in Vietnam”

James "Hollie" Hollingsworth were shielding themselves from rockets and mortars in 1968 as they were fighting in the Marble Mountains during the war on New Year's Eve.

As they hunkered down, the two Marines made a pact: "If we survived this attack, or survived Vietnam, we would contact each other every year on New Year's", Cox recalled.

A retired veteran made good on a promise he made almost five decades ago to a fellow Marine who was holed up in a bunker with him in Vietnam.

Cox also stood guard at Hollingsworth's casket, dressed in full uniform and without the cane the 83-year-old veteran depends on, all to pay tribute to his fallen comrade.

The 83-year-old put on his dress blues and stood guard over his friend's casket during his funeral service earlier this month.

Cox ended his eulogy speaking directly to his departed friend.

Cox visited Hollingsworth, nicknamed Hollie, when he heard he was terminally ill and the fellow soldier asked him for this last favor.

The military forges strong bonds among the men and women who serve, but for Marines, that connection is even stronger.

Cox said that his bond with Hollingsworth as a Marine was "different from any other branch of service" and that he considered him to be 'a brother'.

'I said, "Boy, that's a rough mission you're assigning me to there,"' Cox told Greenvilleonline.com.

The two men met on their way to Vietnam in 1968. Hollingsworth moved to Georgia after his tour of service while Cox embarked on a 20-year career in the Marines and received a Distinguished Flying Cross in honor of his service.

Cox, a door gunner and ordnance chief, and Hollingsworth, a mechanic, would have a saying for one another when doing missions together.
