Germany: Police Arrest Man Over Stolen John Lennon Objects”

German police on Monday arrested a 58-year-old man in Berlin on suspicion of handling stolen items from John Lennon's estate, including the late Beatle's diaries.

Berlin police called the theft "art crime" in a statement released Monday on Twitter. The administrator had found the memorabilia in the company's storage.

Ono identified the objects from photos she was shown at the German consulate in New York, German media reported. They said another suspect lives in Turkey and is now "not available" for law enforcement authorities, without elaborating.

During their investigation, police officers and prosecutors also flew to NY, where they met Ono to have her verify the stolen goods' authenticity.

"The searches were successful, and further items hidden in the suspect's auto, that presumably belonged to John Lennon's estate, were seized, " said the investigators, according to the German public broadcaster.

"The release of the seized evidence can not yet be decided", Steltner said. He has a previous conviction in NY related to the stolen items, she said. Other personal belongings of the singer had been found dead in the trunk of his vehicle.

The items came to the attention of police several months ago after an auction house went bankrupt. They said the items have been in possession of Auctionata since 2014, but were never available for sale online.

Other items belonging to Lennon that were found include a cigarette case, his signature round-framed glasses with an original 1978 prescription and an original recording of a 1965 Beatles concert at the Hollywood Bowl.

There are also three of Lennon's leather-bound diaries, from 1975, 1979 and 1980.

It's not clear whether Ono will get the property back.
