Mum asks for 'inappropriate' Sleeping Beauty to be struck from school curriculum

Mum asks for 'inappropriate' Sleeping Beauty to be struck from school curriculum”

A United Kingdom mother is urging primary schools to remove Sleeping Beauty from their curriculum to avoid teaching inappropriate lessons on sexual consent.

The mum-of-two has said she was disturbed by the "non-consensual" kissing in the classic fairytale, saying that the subtle message could undermine understanding of consent.

"A "#PR #gender #diversity advocate" and "Owner 1 dog+2 small boys" as she describes herself on Twitter, Ms. Hall took to social media platform to voice her concerns.

She later contacted the school and asked for the book to be removed from circulation in younger classes. "My son is only six years old and absorbs what he sees, and it's not exactly that you can turn it into a constructive dialogue". Talking about sex with your 6-year-old son, she is not ready yet. I actually think it would be a great resource for older children.

Given recent headlines with several celebrities speaking out against sexual assault, Sarah says she doesn't want fairytales like Sleeping Beauty to create a culture where consent isn't important.

Still, she stood by her claims that the story, which remains one of Disney's most successful animated films, is wrong for younger children: "But I'm really concerned about it for younger children, would really welcome a conversation about whether this is suitable material".

She said: "These are indicative of how ingrained that kind of behaviour is in society". Sarah it is people like you making issues of situations like this that are the problem. "Ridiculous! Let's wrap everyone up in cotton wool shall we?"

According to the author of the petition, the children at such a young age perceive everything they hear and see, literally. Does she have a point or is she blowing things out of proportion?
