Aftershocks felt after North Korea's nuclear test 'moved earth's crust'

Aftershocks felt after North Korea's nuclear test 'moved earth's crust'”

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) quake monitoring service is no exception, as nuclear tests typically generate aftershocks some time after each test.

Lassina Zerbo, executive secretary of the Vienna-based Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organisation, said analysts had confirmed that the activity was "tectonic" in origin.

Citing recent commercial satellite imagery, 38 North said Monday that there has been a consistently high level of activity at the site's Western portal since North Korea's sixth nuclear test. Experts say that these activities suggest that tunnel excavation is well underway, indicating a potential future nuclear test. "We've had a few of them since the sixth nuclear test".

Pyongyang said the September test was of an H-bomb, and experts have estimated it was 10 times more powerful than the US atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945.

The test, which took place September 3, was the country's sixth and largest underground nuclear test, according to Reuters.

A sequence of tremors registered since that test has led experts to believe that there was damage caused to the region and that it may have affected nearby active volcano Mount Paektu.

According to a Reuters report, this happened again in the vicinity of the Punggye-ri nuclear test site Saturday.

Relations between the US and North Korea have never been positive since the Korean War paused with a ceasefire in 1953, but they have taken a turn for the worse during the Trump administration.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has also said that all of the United States is now within the country's range. Its last eruption was in 1903, and experts have debated whether nuclear testing could trigger another.
