Uber rival Taxify arrives in Sydney”

Taxify is promising to shake up the Australian ride-sharing industry.

Taxify launched in Sydney today with plans to directly rival the likes of Uber through discounted fares and a different approach to "surge pricing".

A new ride-sharing company launching in Sydney hopes to shake up the market now dominated by Uber by offering half-priced fares for one month.

With operations in 20 countries across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Central America, Taxify is no newcomer, but it still has a way to go to beat Uber globally.

"(Uber) is well-established. But they are the only player", Taxify's country manager Samuel Raciti told The TODAY Show.

The ride-sharing service is also drawing competition by taking a reduced commission from drivers. While the company expects prices to be "dependent on the night", it's not anticipating anything greater than a 1.5 times increase, even on popular days such as New Year's Eve.

Another point of difference is in how these surge prices will be activated.

For drivers, the incentives are much more black and white.

Estonian ride-sharing company Taxify has hit the streets of Sydney.

Taxify already has over 4000 drivers in "vibrant and exciting" Sydney, and they're coming for "dynamic, yet cosmopolitan" Melbourne next week.

In an opening swipe at its main rival, the company issued a statement highlighting its commission of 15 per cent, nearly half the amount Uber takes from its drivers.

The app looks quite similar to Uber. However, the same base fares, minimum fares and service fees apply.
