Phil Taylor beats Chris Dobey in first round of World Darts Championship

Phil Taylor is through to the second round of the PDC World Darts Championship after a hard fought win over Chris Dobey at the Alexandra Palace on Saturday (NZ time).

Anderson's standards slipped in the third and he missed 18 darts at the double in a one-sided match, but eased into round two with an average of just over 100 on day three of the tournament.

Christchurch's Bernie Smith then plays his own preliminary qualifier on Thursday (NZT).

"I've been a little bit bitter and I'm gutted that I can't play what I can, and that's what's killing me really". I never used to be like that before, I could win a tournament and then play another tournament, it's unusual. I've got a few days off now to get ready for the next one.

The end may come quickly for Phil "The Power" Taylor, at London's Alexandra Palace.

Earlier on in the evening, Klassen became the fourth seed to crash out in the first round of this year's tournament as he was outplayed by world no. 48 Jan Dekker, who ousted his fellow Dutchman 3-1.

With Hollywood Dobey unable to get anything going, apart from the occasional maximum (he outscored Taylor on the 180s 6-3), The Power was at his clinical best to claim a couple of trademark combination finishes and a 2-0 lead.

With the darts, Dobey pushed the accelerator and nudging his average over 90 for the first time in the match, clinched a fine 11-dart leg to pick up his first set of the match. Taylor sprang back to hit double 16 to level it up and then looked more assured as he finished things off in the final leg.

And Taylor revealed it is "killing" him that he can not compete to the same level that once saw him dominant the world.

One of the more entertaining matches so far was Belgian Dimitri Van den Bergh's 3-1 win over England's Stephen Bunting.

"Michael took it off me last year and I would like to do the same to him this year", Anderson told Sky Sports Main Event after the match.

The Flying Scotsman, who was a losing finalist to most recent victor and this year's favourite Michael van Gerwen, raced to victory in the first set before taking the second with a stunning 131.93 average.
