Council Admits Its 20mph Zones Make Roads More Dangerous

Council Admits Its 20mph Zones Make Roads More Dangerous”

After the zones were introduced the rates of people killed or seriously injured increased in seven of the 13 zones.

The council said that the findings were part of a national trend and suggested that people were "less diligent" when walking and crossing roads in the zones because they thought they were safer. "I'm pretty sure the 20mph zones will stay in place for the foreseeable future".

Reductions in fatalities and injuries were seen in the lower speed limit zones in central Bath, but the increase was seen in rural areas and smaller towns in the county.

Despite this, the council is refusing to reverse the scheme because it will cost too much even though their own report concludes that there is "little in the way of persuasive argument for continuing the programme in the future".

However, the results mirrored a national trend which has seen the number of accidents increase across the United Kingdom, suggesting that people were being "less diligent" when it came to road safety.

Now that officials know these zones aren't working, the logical thing to do would be to replace the new speed limits with the old ones, right?

To reduce traffic deaths, Bath and Northeast Somerset declared 13 safe zones both in urban and more rural areas with strictly enforced 20 miles per hour speed limits.

The Telegraph quotes the council's deputy leader Patrick Anketell-Jones as saying: "It has cost over £800,000 to roll out the 20mph zone and it would probably cost the same to reverse them..."

But, a year on, they found that in more than half the zones more people have been killed or injured - yet they don't have enough money to reverse the policy.

These were Newbridge/Weston, Oldfield /Westmoreland, Odd Down/ Combe Down, Lyncombe/Widcombe, Peasetown St John, Paulton and Keynsham.

It noted: "A large number of evaluation studies have demonstrated a link between the introduction of 20mph zones and a subsequent reduction in casualties". Residents accused the council of not being prepared to find the money to stop people being hurt or killed.

"I disagree about the costs - all they have to do is remove the 20mph signs".

Cllr Anketell-Jones said: "It would be good to have another report after at least a couple more years" worth of information, so we can make a much better judgement.
