Apple admits slowing down older iPhones to protect batteries”

"Our goal is to deliver the best experience for customers, which includes overall performance and prolonging the life of their devices".

Apple has admitted slowing down old iPhone devices with low-capacity batteries, saying it is a way of protecting the devices' components.

The feature was recently highlighted by users on Reddit, who noticed that their processors were running slowly in iPhones with older batteries, but that when they replaced the batteries the speed of the phone returned to normal.

Apple said it changed its software previous year for the iPhone 6, 6s and SE to "smooth out the instantaneous peaks only when needed".

Nearly 1,000 Reddit users responded to the post, many giving details of their own experiences with slow iPhones, particularly the iPhone 6, iPhone 6s, iPhone SE and iPhone 7. Fix site iFixit, which sells replacement batteries and other parts, says it's seen performance boosts of 100 percent in old iPhones given battery transplants.

Since then, Apple has confirmed that it is throttling iPhone performance as iPhone batteries age and their capacity deteriorates.

The revelation irked many users, with some calling for Apple to offer customers more choice in the matter, such as the option to prioritize performance instead of battery life.

Rechargeable batteries have a limited lifespan - and most Apple products have a built-in one - so the shutdown issue is something all devices will eventually have to deal with if they're used long enough. But it also means that your phone will simply run slower, and this is what happened to many iPhone 6s and iPhone 6 devices.

The slowdown affects a range of Apple phones, including the iPhone 7 and iPhone 6S, models that came out in 2016 and 2015, respectively. Batteries do age after a while and are unable to handle the peak performance demanded by newer processors. In addition to addressing aging batteries, the company said it tries to "smooth out" power demand in phones that are operating in cold conditions or that have a low battery charge.

Apple is trying to prevent such random shutdowns. Ideally, Apple should have kept its users in the loop, informed them what is happening with their older iPhones when they are updated to a new version of iOS.

It turns out Apple's mobile operating system includes a throttling mechanism for devices with tired batteries, created to limit CPU utilization in order to prevent peak power demands that the battery is no longer capable of providing. Older batteries are incapable of handling the phone's operation with the same effectiveness as an iPhone with a new battery.

Battery problems are common in the mobile device industry because chemistry tends to be messy.

In a way, this is indeed a fix for unexpected shut-downs, but the complete lack of communication from Apple about this is a problem.
