Pennsylvania Farm Show unveils half-ton butter sculpture

Pennsylvania Farm Show unveils half-ton butter sculpture”

"It is really an appropriate theme for the farm show and an appropriate theme for this year's butter sculpture, is in our diversity both as a commonwealth and certainly as an industry".

State dairy industry leaders from the Pennsylvania Dairymen's Association, the Calving Corner, Feeding Pennsylvania, American Dairy Association North East, Center for Dairy Excellence, Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and Pennsylvania Dairy Promotion Program kicked off the 2018 award-winning Fill a Glass with Hope® fresh milk distribution program today at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center.

Redding unveiled the sculpture with help from Lancaster County dairy farmer Maria Forry, Pennsylvania State Dairy Princess Yvonne Longenecker of Blair County, and sculptors Jim Victor and Marie Pelton of Montgomery County. The butter, not suitable for human consumption, was donated by Land O'Lakes in South Middleton Township.

"The farm show opens January 6th and runs through January 13th".

Linda Moss of FirstEnergy encouraged Farm Show participants to get one of the Farm Show's famous milkshakes and drop off a cash donation at that stand for the Fill a Glass with Hope program. "The dairy industry provides 60,000 jobs".

The husband and wife sculptors said they split up the work in making the sculpture each year.

Miriam Miller, project manager for the Calving Corner, introduced two three-week-old calves named "Fill" and "Hope" and explained that sixteen calves are scheduled to be delivered during the eight-day Farm Show. They put gobs of butter onto the frame, then spent the next 14 days using modeling and drywall tools and special knives to turn the butter into a creamy work of art. Following the Farm Show, the butter will be moved to the Reinford Farm in Juniata County to be converted into renewable energy in the farm's methane digester.

Cows from four dairy farms in Pennsylvania will rotate through the exhibit. She said latest statistics show that Pennsylvania produces 10.9 billion pounds of milk a year and ranks sixth in milk production and second in butter production.
