Barbra Streisand Wants the Golden Globes to Acknowledge Female Directors”

The Golden Globes have a disastrous track record when it comes to awarding female film makers: they've only ever given the Best Director gong to one woman.

Streisand, who eventually presented the award for best drama to "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri", said the message of the night, and Hollywood's new promise to eliminate sexual misconduct, meant something.

"Folks, time's up! We need more women directors and more women to be nominated for best director", she insisted.

Unfortch, the awards themselves didn't quite reflect the times - most notably with an all-male set of Best Director nominees.

After an awards night with so many hopeful moments, where women seemed to be taking back the narrative on the red carpet, in their acceptance speeches and in the number of awards going to women-centered projects, it was a stinging dose of reality.

The Golden Globes sure has been good value this year.

Anyway, I'm very proud to stand in a room with people who speak out against gender inequality, sexual harassment, and the pettiness that has poisoned our politics. That was 34 years ago.

"Truth is powerful, and in a really good film, we recognize the truth about ourselves, about others, and it's so powerful that it can even change people's minds, touch people's hearts and ultimately even change society itself", Streisand said. "Not right!" she tweeted. Greta Gerwig, Dee Rees, and Patty Jenkins didn't receive nominations for their films despite critical acclaim, especially frustrating when you consider Lady Bird won Best Picture as well as Best Actress.

No women were nominated for a Golden Globe in the director's category this year.
