Defends Decision to Pay Catt Sadler Less Than Her Male Co-Host”

NEW YORK, NY - SEPTEMBER 14: E news correspondant Catt Sadler seen around New York Fashion Week: The Shows at Skylight at Moynihan Station on September 14, 2016 in New York City.

And on Tuesday, E! chief Frances Berwick confirmed that there is indeed a difference between what Sadler and Kennedy were making at the network, but, she claimed, the gap was for a good reason.

Berwick said she took issue with how Sadler's exit had been covered in the press: "I don't think it's been portrayed accurately", she said.

Sadler, who's been with E! for 12 years, explained that she was alarmed to learn of "a massive disparity in pay" between herself and her male co-host Jason Kennedy, who she claimed made "close to double" what she did. "Catt was focused on daytime; Jason Kennedy is on prime evening news, plus red carpet. I hope that sets the record straight on that".

"I have two decades experience in broadcasting and started at the network the very same year as my close friend and colleague that I adore", she said. "I was so shocked to hear that E! doesn't believe in paying their female co-hosts the same as their male co-hosts", said the Will & Grace star. How can I not echo the actions of my heroes and stand for what is right no matter what the cost?

The executive is, of course, responding to actress Debra Messing who called the network out during a live red carpet interview at the Golden Globes on Sunday night. "He has done right by me in every respect", she wrote in an emotional Instagram post. While speaking to E! correspondent Giuliana Rancic, Messing pivoted the conversation from her support of Time's Up to Sadler's alleged situation.

"So we stand with [Sadler] and that's something that can change tomorrow".

Rancic did her best to recover from the awkward interaction. I mean, we get paid a lot, so it's hard to complain, but the disparity is insane", adding, "Compared to men, in most professions, women make 80 cents to the dollar.

"We want diversity, we want intersectional gender parity, we want equal pay", Messing told E!.
