College Student Jaila Gladden Used Her Phone To Escape A Kidnapper”

Gladden, a resident of Carrollton, Georgia, left her apartment on the night of September 4, 2017, to buy medicine and tea from a nearby Kroger.

Jaila Gladden told the story of her kidnapping to BuzzFeed News, opening up about the ordeal because she said better security in the parking lot where she was abducted could have saved her. After she left the store and was headed back to her auto, a man asked her for a lighter and she replied that she didn't have one.

Jaila Gladden, 21, was shopping at a grocery store one night in September 2017 when a stranger pressed a knife to her stomach, forced her into her auto, raped her, and tried to drive her all the way to MI in a terrifying kidnapping attempt, according to the Daily Mail.

Soon after, they made their first stop at an abandoned church.

He told Buzzfeed he instantly knew the situation was serious and went to police.

Wilson later revealed his plan for the evening: driving to MI and robbing a convenience store on the way there.

Wilson purportedly told her that he meant to rob a gas station and then drive to MI. But what ultimately got her back to safety, she told BuzzFeed News, was her talking her abductor into handing her phone over to her, and her surreptitiously sharing her location with her boyfriend. When Tamir asked why she was all the way in Atlanta, she replied, "Kid napped". "Stop playing rn", Bryant followed up. "I'm heading to the police station".

Throughout the course of the night, Gladden was able to continue secretly texting information to her boyfriend, including the fact that she'd been taken in her own auto, what kind of weapon her assailant had, and where he was headed next.

When he was unsuccessful and asked her to find another location she was able to make contact again.

When he wanted to try again at a grocery store, Jaila again said she needed her phone to guide him. After she told him she didn't have one, she continued to her auto.

Jaila was only able to fire off a quick line at a time, telling her boyfriend that they were in her auto and she didn't want police approaching with sirens. "Telling parents now", her boyfriend responded.

And then Gladden said the most heartbreaking thing of all.

"I don't want him to kill me", she wrote. "If he see's light, he's gonna do it".

Because she didn't want the man to catch her, Jaila was cautious with her texts, firing off only short messages.

By this time, Gladden's boyfriend was at the police station, providing officers with real-time updates from his girlfriend's texts.

A police officer driving around Atlanta spotted an idle vehicle that matched the description of Gladden's. Gladden was safe at last.

He has since been charged with kidnapping, hijacking a motor vehicle, aggravated assault, rape, aggravated sodomy, false imprisonment, and aggravated assault against a police officer. He's now in jail awaiting trial.

She then inconspicuously shared her location with her boyfriend along with the word, "kidnapped".

"If this victim did not have her phone and did not think quickly she may not have been as lucky", a spokesperson for the Carrollton police told BuzzFeed.

On an iPhone, this can be achieved by going to Settings, Privacy, and Location Services, and turning on the "Share My Location" feature.
