Deadline for Iran Nuclear Deal Looming, Pres. Trump Expected to Refocus Sanctions”

Recertification indicates Iran is living up to its side of the deal to limit its nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief by the US and other countries.

A senior State Department official told reporters Wednesday that Tillerson and Mattis would be meeting with Trump on the matter before an announcement Friday.

Aides said they were looking at measures including ending the requirement that Trump re-certify the agreement every 90 days and changing some of the so-called sunset provisions to allow the reimposition of US sanctions, with no timetable, if Iran's nuclear program reaches certain thresholds.

The president is reportedly still weighing his options and is reluctant to publicly waive the sanctions, although his top advisers had suggested for him to do so. Failure to sign those waivers, renewed every 120 days, would automatically reimpose sanctions on Iran and those conducting business with it overseas, effectively withdrawing Washington from the deal.

It said it would also like Congress to amend the legislation that gives lawmakers the authority to slap sanctions on Iran if it decides Tehran is in violation of the nuclear agreement, outlining "trigger points" instead that set off automatic sanctions.

WASHINGTON-The 2015 Iran nuclear agreement faces a potentially fateful week, with a series of deadlines awaiting President Donald Trump as Tehran reacts to recent antigovernment protests.

Trump refused to make the certification the last time the deadline rolled around, but because it's a requirement of USA law, and not the deal itself, that move did not kill the accord.

So far, the deal has helped defuse the Iran nuclear crisis and bolstered the worldwide non-proliferation regime.

"These sanctions target key entities involved in Iran´s ballistic missile program, which the Iranian regime prioritizes over the economic well-being of the Iranian people", U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement.

Another proposal would require snapback if Iran refuses a request from the International Atomic Energy Agency, the U.N.'s atomic watchdog, to inspect a military site not now being monitored. One would let a simple House and Senate majority stop any effort to snap back sanctions, unless the president vetoes the block.
