Fresh or frozen embryos equally viable in IVF

Fresh or frozen embryos equally viable in IVF”

Reports by the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology have noted that more fertility centers choose to defer embryo transfer by freezing embryos, Zhang said. The women were randomly assigned to receive either fresh or frozen embryos.

The study has been published in this week in journal The New England Journal of Medicine.

For women using in vitro fertilization to have a child, using either fresh or frozen embryos have similar success rates for most women, according to an global team of researchers.

To make their finding, the researchers looked at nearly 800 women who suffer from infertility.

Researchers found that women using frozen embryos had a live birth rate of 48.7%, versus a live birth rate of 50.2% for women in the fresh-embryo group.

In the second, of 782 women without PCOS, live birthrates were 33.8 percent for the frozen-embryo group and 31.5 percent for the fresh, again an insignificant difference. Subsequent live birth rates were also very similar - 34% for the thawed embryos and 32% for the fresh.

The study, however, did find that frozen-embryo transfers resulted in a significantly lower risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) than women using fresh-embryo transfers.

Co-researcher Lan N. Vuong from My Duc Hospital, however, sounds a note caution over the findings.

The study was carried out by with the collaboration with Professor Ben Mol, from the University of Adelaide's Robinson Research Institute, who is also a member of the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute's Healthy Mothers, Babies and Children theme.

"Our research results are specific to a common freezing method known as cryotech vitrification", he says, "so it may not apply to all embryo freezing techniques now being used. Further research will be needed to compare pregnancy outcomes and live birth rates from other embryo freezing techniques". Well, the researchers are now working more on it so that it can be used in all fertile clinic all over the world as infertility is now a major headache throughout the world.
