Golden Globes 2018: Acceptance speeches continue conversation about sexual misconduct

With a red carpet dyed black by actresses dressed in a colour-co-ordinated statement, the Golden Globes were transformed into an A-list expression of female empowerment in the post-Harvey Weinstein era.

Men also showed their support, with the likes of Justin Timberlake and Ricky Martin wearing black shirts to match their tuxedos.

Multiple allegations against actors, filmmakers and Hollywood agents since October 2017 have led to numerous accused being fired, forced to step down, or dropped from creative projects.

The evening's anticipated centerpiece, Oprah Winfrey's acceptance speech for the Cecile B. DeMille Award, did not disappoint.

"Lady Bird", the coming-of-age saga chosen as best comedy or musical, also received a boost, though perhaps the bigger question is whether the film's director, Greta Gerwig, can break through in that category.

The French drama "Three billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri" enjoyed the best possible luck in the ceremony, It took home as many as four globes from the 75th annual Golden Globes.

If there was one clear victor on Sunday, it was "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri", which nabbed Globes as best drama, for writer Martin McDonagh (who also directed the film), star Frances McDormand and co-star Sam Rockwell.

"It was very important to all of us involved with Time's Up that it not just be about the women of Hollywood because we're already a privileged group but to extend to the women of the world because as I said tonight there isn't a culture, a race, a religion, a politic, a workplace that hasn't been affected by it".

The actress, who won the award for best actress in a limited series for her role in "Big Little Lies", thanked her mother, Janelle Kidman, during her acceptance speech, noting that she was an activist.

It was a jarring speech on a surreal red carpet; I could feel the rage and power of the women gathered there buzzing through my TV.

"My mumma was an advocate for the women's movement when I was growing up and because of her I am standing here. Thank you for what you fought for so hard". Testifying that his fascination with monsters had saved his life, he said, "I thank you, my monsters thank you, and somewhere [horror movie actor] Lon Chaney is smiling on all of us".

-Actress, Limited Series or TV Movie: Nicole Kidman, "Big Little Lies".

Also missing from the list was Patty Jenkins, who directed the superhero movie Wonder Woman. Winfrey's speech thundered into a rallying cry for equality and justice for women everywhere, "whose names we'll never know", and a salute to men who support them.

"A new day is on the horizon", she said. "And I'm especially proud and inspired by all the women who have felt strong enough and empowered enough to speak up and share their personal stories", she said, referencing the "Me Too" movement.

The Globes have a reputation, deserved or not, for being the fun! awards show - the unrestricted schmooziness!

The crowd went wild; it was up to film director Ron Howard and actress Natalie Portman to follow Winfrey's speech, with a presentation of best film director. Last year's broadcast drew the second biggest audience for the show in a decade.
