Moira Donegan Outs Herself As Creator Of 'S**tty Media Men' List”

The editor, Moira Donegan, said she created the Google spreadsheet in October to allow women in the media industry to put into writing what many of them had long discussed in private: the names of men to stay away from, including sexual harassers and abusers.

But she's not the only one: other women have posted on social media to say the list is theirs in an attempt to protect its creator from online trolling. She described her experience of watching thousands of women of every race gather to demand the president's resignation as something she thought was unlikely to happen.

Digital producer Ana Breton of "Full Frontal With Samantha Bee" tweeted on Tuesday, "I$3 f we ALL say we wrote the list, they can't attack one specific person".

Following the article's publication, many in the media industry took to the social media platform with an huge amount of support for Donegan, praising her efforts to create a space for women to report sexual harassment and abuse. "The hope was to create an alternate avenue to report this kind of behavior and warn others without fear of retaliation", she wrote.

Lexi Alexander, a Palestinian-American-German filmmaker and former martial arts champion, admitted to creating the list on Twitter.

Less than a day after its creation, the file's existence was revealed by BuzzFeed's Doree Shafrir.

"I only wanted to create a place for women to share their stories of harassment and assault without being needlessly discredited or judged", she said. "The women who used the spreadsheet, and who spread it to others, used this power in a special way, and I'm thankful to all of them", she wrote.

Its impact on her own life was profound as well.

"In the weeks after the spreadsheet was exposed, my life changed dramatically".

The spreadsheet in question, dubbed the "Shitty Media Men" list, is a compilation of dozens of crowdsourced names of alleged abusers, harassers and creeps in the media and publishing world, primarily in NY. I lost friends: "some who thought I had been overzealous, others who thought I had not been zealous enough", she wrote. She lost friends. She also lost her job, she said.

Donegan says she chose to reveal her identity after Harpers fact-checkers called her about the forthcoming article, written by Katie Roiphe. According to Donegan, that's not the case - Roiphe apparently contacted her asking if she'd like to comment on an article on the "feminist movement", failing to mention the spreadsheet at all.

Still, a campaign went viral as women banded together on social media to protect Donegan's identity. "I declined and heard nothing more from Roiphe or Harper's until I received an email from a fact checker with questions about Roiphe's piece", Donegan wrote. People started criticizing the Harper's magazine and Roiphe for nor respecting Donegan's privacy.

Ahead of Alexander's revelation today, writer Katie Roiphe told the New York Times that she was not going to name the Shitty Men in Media creator in her piece planned for Harper's March issue; the essayist went on to tell the paper she didn't even know the name of the individual.

"They feared that I would be threatened, stalked, raped, or killed". All of this was terrifying. "I was naïve because I did not understand the forces that would make the document go viral", she added.
