Recalled ice cream bars sold at Aldi and Giant, among other retailers

Recalled ice cream bars sold at Aldi and Giant, among other retailers”

A NY company whose products have been sold at stores across the country including Giant Eagle has issued a recall on ice cream bars that may contain a bacterium that can cause fatal infections.

The orange cream bars and chocolate-coated vanilla ice cream bars were produced by Fieldbrook Foods Corporation at its plant in Dunkirk, New York, the Food and Drug Administration said.

There is no evidence of any contamination prior to October 31, 2017, but the company has issued the recall back to January 1, 2017, as a precautionary measure.

Listeria monocytogenes primarily affects pregnant women, newborns and those with weakened immune systems, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease. No illnesses have been reported. If you do get sick with symptoms of the flu, or with fever, headache, stiff neck, and diarrhea, see your doctor.

The recalled orange and chocolate bars, along with variety packs that include the chocolate-coated bars, are sold under various brand names and at store chains that have locations in our area.

Most of the recalled products have have a production date of January 1-Dec.

In addition to this public communication regarding this recall, Giant Eagle initiated its consumer recall telephone notification process.

Products under the Hood and Kemp brands may have a "best by" date between July 1, 2018, to June 30, 2019. The company has suspended production and distribution of all products produced on this production line while it cooperates with the FDA to fully investigate the source of the problem. Those with questions can call Fieldbrook Foods at 800-333-0805, extension 2270.

Customers who have purchased these products should discard unused portions and bring their purchase receipt to Giant or Martin's stores for a full refund.

"Fieldbrook Foods Corp. takes the safety and integrity of our products very seriously", a statement carried by the FDA says.
