Trump gives Feinstein a re-election gift

Trump gives Feinstein a re-election gift”

Trump lashed out at Feinstein, the senior Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, Wednesday morning, after she unilaterally released a transcript of testimony from the founder of the firm behind the infamous Trump dossier. Dianne Feinstein on Tuesday.

An informant inside the Trump campaign provided information to an FBI investigation into Russian election meddling, it was alleged yesterday.

On Tuesday, Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.), a member of the Judiciary Committee, told reporters that Feinstein's release of the Simpson transcript would mark "the end of bipartisan cooperation" on the panel.

"He thought from his perspective there was. a security issue about whether a presidential candidate was being blackmailed".

For his part, Mr Trump has always dismissed the dossier as nothing more than a politically motivated smear.

"What came back was something, you know, very different and obviously more alarming, which had to do with - you know, which outlined a political conspiracy and a much broader set of issues than the ones that we basically went looking for", Simpson testified. He likened the sense of responsibility he said Steele felt to the professional duties that attorneys have in some cases to report a crime if they learn of one.

Steele later told to Simpson that he believed the FBI would consider his information credible because the Bureau had corroborating intelligence, including from a human source within the Trump organization. Mr Simpson, this source said, had mischaracterised a tip from an Australian diplomat about Trump campaign staffer George Papadopoulos.

When he first publicly acknowledged the existence of the investigation into the Trump campaign's possible ties to the Kremlin last March, then-FBI Director James Comey said the inquiry had begun in July 2016.

It was released by the ranking Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, Sen.

Democrats accused Republicans of withholding Simpson's testimony in order to spread false information about his firm's role and undermine the Russian Federation probe.

"Based on the information contained therein, we are respectfully referring Mr. Steele to you for investigation of potential violations of 18 U.S.C. § 1001, for statements the Committee has reason to believe Mr. Steele made regarding his distribution of information contained", the senators wrote in the letter.

The question about how closely people in Trump's orbit worked with the Russians who attacked the 2016 election has always been bigger than the dossier.

The 312-page transcript shows that Republican staffers on the committee repeatedly pressed Simpson about whether he had political motivations in hiring Steele. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., has released a transcript from an interview with Simpson, the firm that commissioned a dossier of allegations about President Donald Trump's ties to Russian Federation. "Her action undermines the integrity of the committee's oversight work and jeopardizes its ability to secure candid voluntary testimony relating to the independent recollection of future witnesses", said the spokesman, Taylor Foy.

A representative for Fusion GPS did not immediately offer a comment.

On Tuesday, Trump's personal lawyer Michael Cohen filed two defamation lawsuits, one in NY state court against the popular website BuzzFeed News, which published the Fusion GPS dossier past year, and the second in federal court against Fusion GPS itself, ABC News reported.

A special counsel and three congressional committees - including the Senate Judiciary Committee - are investigating Russia's campaign of cyber attacks and disinformation to influence the election in favor of Trump.
