Chennai: Commuters breathed a sigh of relief as government buses began plying on Friday, following the withdrawal of the statewide bus strike by Tamil Nadu Transporters Union.

Bus services in Chennai and elsewhere normalized from last night following a direction by the High Court of Madras to the striking Transport staff members to commence work at the earliest.

Not refusing to back down, the state government had roped in additional drivers and conductors to resume the stalled buses. The unions had called for a 2.57 percent hike, to which the government offered only 2.44 percent, leading to a stalemate.

The AAP and CPI (M) showed their support for the Tamil Nadu transport workers. "I appeal to workers...they should return to work", he said.

Describing the stir as being for the sake of the workers as also for the common people of the state, the unions have said they will intensify the stir.

"It is nothing but our own money that the government has illegally misappropriated". Tamil Nadu minister for municipal administration and rural development S P Velumani moved a bill to amend the Tamil Nadu Local Authorities Entertainments Tax Act, 2017, with retrospective effect from September 26, 2017, the date on which an ordinance was passed by the governor towards collecting local entertainment tax. The employees have been fighting for over a year for wage revision and for clearance of arrears that amount to Rs7,543 crore, including retirement benefits and provident fund.
