Cards take on 'potent' Virginia Tech offense

Cards take on 'potent' Virginia Tech offense”

Updates with new lede, recasts headline. However, Hill wrapped up the half with a 25-footer for the Hokies, pulling them within four, 44-40, at the break.

After back-to-back wins at Pittsburgh and Wake Forest, Virginia Tech had lots of momentum as they headed to Louisville in search of their best win of the season.

The Hokies shot it pretty well, they stayed out of foul trouble for the most part, and they combatted Louisville's length with speed. Adel is averaging a team-high 15.1 points this season.

Louisville teammates weren't shocked by the breakout performance its leading scorer had been building toward all season.

The back-and-forth game featured 17 lead changes and 10 ties.

"Finally, it's about time", joked senior center Anas Mahmoud (six points, five rebounds). "He's been playing really well in practice and was due for a game like this".

Other Cardinals made clutch contributions as they shot 31 of 59 from the field (53 percent) to follow up Wednesday's comeback win at No. 23 Florida State.

Ray Spalding (six points, five rebounds, four blocks) and Ryan McMahon combined for the next seven points.

Quentin Snider added 19 points for the Cardinals (13-4, 3-1), while V.J. King was good for 16.

Justin Robinson had 23 points for the Hokies, while Kerry Blackshear finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds.

Virginia Tech fired the first shot, ripping off eight straight points and taking a 19-13 lead at the 10:56 mark when Alexander-Walker sank two free throws. But Louisville was the team that sizzled on Saturday.

As a team, Virginia Tech was 30-of-61 (49.2%) from the field, 8-of-22 (36.4%) from three-point range, and an impressive 18-of-22 (81.8%) from the charity stripe. But they couldn't get needed plays down the stretch and came up short in their second trip to Kentucky in a month.

The Louisville men's basketball team beat Virginia Tech 94-86 today at the KFC Yum!

Louisville sank 13 3-pointers in a 94-86 victory over the Hokies on Saturday. The 6-foot-5 junior guard leads the team with 15.2 points a game. Ahmed Hill added 17 points, while Nickeil Alexander-Walker chipped in with 10.

Louisville scored 20 points off Tech's 19 turnovers.

"We did a great job on offense", interim coach David Padgett said, "shared the ball, shot the ball well and did a good job offensively of being aggressive and withstanding a little bit of a run they had there in the second half". Justin Bibbs had 9 points and 5 rebounds on 4-10 shooting while Chris Clarke had 8 points, 5 assists, and 4 rebounds, but also had a turnover problem with 4 turnovers. Virginia Tech didn't block a shot. The Hokies now have a week off before facing Florida State at home next Saturday in what doesn't feel far from being a must win with UNC two days later and VT lacking a quality win.

Last season the Hokies set a school record by making 17 three-point attempts, but still lost at Louisville 94-90.

The Cardinals (12-4, 2-1 in ACC) defeated Florida State 73-69 to earn their first road win against a top-25 opponent since 2014.
