11 political parties in Nagaland to boycott assembly polls”

The different armed Naga "political" groups now engaged in negotiation with representatives of the government of India have warned "vested interest and unscrupulous persons" not to sabotage the Indo-Naga talks by way of filing nominations and participating in the coming Nagaland assembly elections. Addressing the Republic Day celebration here, he said 20 years of negotiations with NSCN (IM) and signing of the Framework Agreement in 2015 with it have given hope to the people that solution to the issue is not far.

Their decision came after the underground insurgent groups- NSCN (IM) and the Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs)- asked the politicians of Nagaland not to file nomination.

"The negotiators are indeed overwhelmed by the unstinted support of our people, particulary at this juncture when the Nagasare once again put to test".

After a meeting with the Core Committee on Sunday, Naga separatists had issued a joint statement warning persons planning to contest the Nagaland Assembly polls and asking them not to sabotage the historical talks by taking part in the electoral processes.

"We also express our appreciation to all the tribal hohos and civil society organizations for their immeasurable services rendered towards building oneness", the joint statement added.

The Core Committee of Nagaland Tribal Hohos and Civil Organisations (CCNTCHOC) appealed to the Election Commission (EC) to defer February 27 Assembly elections in favour of early solution to the protracted Naga insurgency.“The opportunity for a peaceful resolution of the Naga political issue has never been this favourable as the political negotiations are in advance stage and we can not effort to distract the focus on the process at any cost, ” the Core Committee said in a letter to Chief Election Commissioner O.P. Rawat.

Apart from the political parties, the negotiating groups, namely, the NSCN (IM) and the NNPGs would be participating in the joint meeting, it said.

"It is the unanimous view of the Naga people that the political solution or Naga peace accord is more important than elections and therefore, it has become imperative that the elections to the legislative assembly of Nagaland be deferred for peace and tranquillity", read a joint declaration signed by the parties.
