OPP suspect fatal pileup caused by "brake check" road rage

OPP suspect fatal pileup caused by

A 22-year-old Niagara Falls woman died in hospital and another young woman remains critically injured in hospital after a multi-vehicle crash on the QEW just east of Cawthra Road Saturday night.

The OPP said there is one victim who was pronounced dead after the crash occurred but they were revived a short time later.

Police initially said the collision involved five vehicles, but on Sunday said investigators now believe the crash was caused by an incident of road rage involving a sixth vehicle.

That action caused a "chain reaction", Schmid said, leading four vehicles behind the auto to slam into one another, and a pickup truck behind them to hit the Toyota in which Turcott was a passenger.

The other critically injured patient is a 19 year old woman who was in the same vehicle. The vehicle is described as small, possibly a Honda Civic, and its license plate is believed to have begun with letters C and E.

Witnesses said the lead vehicle sped up after braking and then took off, Schmidt said.

Investigators are urging the driver of a dark-coloured vehicle, similar to a Honda Civic and possibly with a licence plate starting with the letters "CE" to consult a lawyer and come forward to speak with investigators. That vehicle was last seen exiting the QEW at The West Mall, between Mississauga and Toronto.

He urged the driver to get a lawyer and contact police. Of those twelve people, five sustained minor injuries while two faced critical injuries.

Police are asking anyone with information to call Port Credit OPP at 1-905-278-6131 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or submit anonymous tips online.
