French Ligue 1 referee who kicked player handed three-month ban”

"After hearing Mr Tony Chapron and reading the instructor's report, the commission made a decision to suspend him for six months, three of which were suspended", a post read on

The French soccer federation has banned referee Tony Chapron for three months after he kicked a player during a league match.

On January 14, Chapron was accidentally tripped by Carlos as the defender attempted to chase back and help his side deal with a counter-attack from Paris Saint-Germain, only for the official to retaliate by kicking the 24-year-old.

On the night of the fixture, Nantes president Waldemar Kita called for Chapron to be banned for six months.

A few seconds after the incident, Chapron showed Carlos a yellow card, which resulted in the player being sent off as he had also been booked in the first half.

Carlos' booking was rescinded at Chapron's request. Chapron later acknowledged that Carlos inadvertently knocked him over and apologized. In 2015, Philippe Kalt lost his chance of refereeing the League Cup final for elbowing away Adamo Coulibaly while showing a card to another Lens player.

"It's a joke. I got 20 text messages from across the world telling me this referee is a joke".

Chapron has previously announced that he intends to retire at the end of the current season.

"The Nantes player, Diego Carlos, crashed into me", said Chapron, who has taken charge of more than 400 matches in his career, in a statement on January 15.
