Parmount's Broadway series boasts world premiere of 'August Rush' musical”

The tuner, which has always been in the works, features a book and lyrics by the previously reported Glen Berger (Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark) along with music and lyrics by Mark Mancina, who scored the original film. A commercial producer is attached to the venture: Junkyard Dog Productions, whose current Broadway hit, "Come From Away", made a pivotal stop at Ford's Theatre before its NY run.

August Rush features music and lyrics by Mark Mancina (who scored the original film), a book and lyrics by Glen Berger, and orchestrations and additional music by David Metzger. "August Rush centers on the emotional and musical journey of a young boy-a lost boy".

The musical is based on the original screenplay by Paul Castro and Nick Castle, which centers on a young musical prodigy as he searches for his birth parents, both musicians, in NY.

The critical reception wasn't favorable a decade ago: "a loopy, goopy fairy tale" was how Entertainment Weekly's Lisa Schwarzbaum described it. August Rush will be directed by Tony victor John Doyle (The Color Purple), who has been attached to the project since a well-received 2014 workshop.

The ascendant Paramount Theatre in Aurora now plans to muscle in on the big Chicago business of new, pre-Broadway musicals.

According to Rater, the actors in the show will play their own instruments, a style similar to past Doyle projects, including his Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim's "Company". In a romantic, sentimental way, it's lovely in a musical when music can be the connective glue in the story'.
