Prof Was Getting Kids Ready for School When ICE Came”

"Mr. Jamal is subject to an enforcement of a broken immigration system in which each Administration picks and chooses when it will enforce its laws against persons or not", his attorney Jeffrey Bennett told HuffPost. His pending deportation, after three decades in the community, comes amid a Trump Administration crackdown on immigrants with ambiguous immigration statuses. The oldest, 14-year-old Taseen, would later tell the Kansas City Star that ICE agents warned his mother she could be charged with interfering if she tried to hug Jamal goodbye on their front lawn.

"While we have only limited information about the complex issues that apply to Syed's case, we hope there are options that may allow this husband, father, valued community member, scientist and educator to remain in the United States", President Greg Gunderson wrote in a statement to 41 Action News. "So they took him out to the auto, put handcuffs [on him] behind his back".

"To effect this removal order, deportation officers with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested Jamal outside his residence on January 24, 2018". He earned bachelor's degrees in biology, biochemistry and philosophy from Rockhurst University in 1997, before earning his master's degree in pharmaceutical sciences from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 2001. He got another visa to work at Children's Mercy Hospital.

Park University officials did not respond to a request for comment. Jamal's three kids were born in the United States. They say it had been years since he'd had as much as a speeding ticket, so the raid seemed to come out of nowhere. "I felt like I'd been shot because I didn't think it was happening", Taseen says.

"The first thing that came to mind was to ask them for warrants, so I did". "I really think this is one where Syed needs to come home". "I couldn't do anything".

"They were loading my dad into the vehicle".

Since his arrest almost two weeks ago, Jamal has been held at a jail in Morgan County, Missouri, about a three hours' drive from Lawrence. Taseen hasn't seen his father since.

"It's very quiet. And, my mom, I'll just go to ask her something and see that she's crying".

The family does have allies. This is just a bunch of people in this community that love this family. An online petition, created by neighbors Marci Leuschen and Susan Baker-Anderson, has already gathered almost 28,000 signatures to keep Jamal in the U.S. Baker-Anderson said she was shocked when Jamal's wife, Angela Zaynaub Chowdhury, called and told her the news. They are neighbors, and their children participate in the same engineering and "Future Cities" programs at school, she said, and it never occurred to her that was a possibility. "My son still talks about those lessons with him". He regularly volunteers in Lawrence Public Schools, where his children are enrolled, and recently ran for an empty school board seat.

Jamal's immigration status is complicated. In fact, that was his second warning. So, Jamal is here illegally, and the government is within its rights to deport him. The same goes for his wife, Angela Zaynub Chowdhury. He has three USA -born children, five US citizen siblings and no criminal record, according to the newspaper.

Jamal himself wrote a letter to immigration officials, telling them he fears for his safety back in Bangladesh due to his status as an ethnic minority in the country.

Ahmed continued to stay in the U.S. under an Obama administration provision called "prosecutorial discretion" where he was given a temporary work permit; however, he had to report to immigration officials yearly.

Jamal's attorney said it's possible that his wife could also eventually be deported. He said US immigration enforcement actions have ramped up dramatically in recent weeks.

Kansas Rep. Dennis "Boog" Highberger, who represents Jamal in the Kansas Legislature, said his constituent's predicament is a outcome of the last presidential election. "It's harsher, certainly not family oriented".

As of Sunday night, a petition supporting Jamal had drawn nearly 20,000 signatures.

Bennett said Jamal did initially overstay his visa but in 2012 was granted was called "prosecutorial discretion". Even if he avoids being sent back to Bangladesh this month, Jamal will face a long, uncertain path to citizenship.
