After settling dispute, Israel appoints new ambassador to Jordan

After settling dispute, Israel appoints new ambassador to Jordan”

After Amman demanded that Israel appoint a new ambassador following a July shooting incident, The Israeli Foreign Ministry announced on Thursday it has appointed Amir Weissbrod for the position. A fluent Arabic speaker, Weissbrod served as first secretary in Israel's Jordanian embassy between 2001 and 2004.

His appointment awaits final confirmation by the cabinet.

On July 23, security guard Ziv Moyal at the embassy shot dead Jordanian worker Mohammed Jawawdeh who had stabbed him in the back with a screwdriver after coming to an apartment to install furniture, according to the Israeli foreign ministry. The details of the event are a subject of disagreement between Israel and Jordan. Jordanian media reports quoted the families of the two Jordanians as saying that Israel had paid some $5 million to them as part of the reparations agreement.

The resumption of operations at the Israeli embassy in Amman was made possible after Israel expressed regret over the shooting and agreed to pay compensation to the families of the two Jordanians who were killed. Shallin was sent home in the wake of the incident. A statement last month from the Prime Minister's Office said: "Israel attributes great importance to the strategic ties with Israel, and the countries will work to advance cooperation between them and to strengthen the peace treaty [between them]". The guard immediately went to the Israeli embassy, with Jordanian officials demanding that he be surrendered.

Israel's ambassador at the time, Einat Schlein, and the entire embassy staff were returned to Israel amid rising tensions between the countries.

The Foreign Ministry of Jordan said then it had received an official memo from Israel's foreign ministry in which "the Israeli government expressed its apology and deep regrets regarding the Israeli embassy incident in July previous year, resulting in the martyrdom of two Jordanian citizens, and also regarding the incident of killing Judge Raed Zuaiter". A Jordanian bystander was also shot and killed in the incident. It is unclear how much has been paid.
