Trump establishes national vetting center for immigrants

The membership of that panel will also be determined during the six-month period.

It's unclear how this effort will change the way travelers and immigrants to the United States are vetted.

President Trump signed an order Tuesday establishing a one-stop shop for investigating new immigrants to the United States, giving shape to a long-promised policy of "extreme vetting".

While the center's efforts are largely expected to focus on visa applicants, immigrants and others looking to enter the USA, the center will also look to streamline vetting of certain individuals who are already in the U.S., including those subject to deportation proceedings, according to the National Security Council official.

A board overseeing the center will be composed of senior executives chosen by the secretaries of State, Defense, and Homeland Security; the attorney general; and the directors of National Intelligence and the Central Intelligence Agency.

At this point, no information has been released on how vetting will change and how the center will directly impact foreign immigrants and travellers.

The NVC, which will be led by the Department of Homeland Security, will help fulfill the President's requirement that departments and agencies improve their coordination and use of intelligence and other information in the vetting process.

President Donald Trump is finally making good on his promise to implement "extreme vetting" practices for immigrants, refugees and anybody else trying to enter the US, APA reports quoting Reuters. The NVC's operations will adhere to America's strong protections for individuals' privacy, civil rights, and civil liberties.

In December, Trump blamed "lax immigration system" for the terror attack in Manhattan which saw an improvised bomb detonate near the Port Authority.

"We already rigorously vet people traveling to the USA, so it is unclear what value such a center would add", said Faiza Patel, co-director of the Liberty & National Security Program, at the Brennan Center for Justice.

A week after the controversial statements were made, the DHS barred people from Haiti from applying for low-skilled working visas.
