Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon laptops recalled over explosion fears

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon laptops recalled over explosion fears”

Computer manufacturer Lenovo has announced that some of its laptops may be susceptible to becoming a fire risk. Lenovo has since issued a voluntary recall, detailing that the loose screw could cause damage to the battery and overheating to the point of potentially starting a fire. The issue is a small unfastened screw that could damage the laptop's battery, potentially causing it to short and overheat.

The term "screw loose" is nearly always a bad thing, but none more so than the literal screw loose in the ThinkPad Carbon X1.

"Customers should confirm if they have a laptop impacted by the recall by validating the Machine Type (MT) and Build information as noted above in Q1, and then go to the web site: https://support.lenovo.com/X1C_5GEN_RECALL to confirm their serial number (SN)".

In a somewhat lucky turn of events, this issue is only known to exist in models that were manufactured between December 1, 2016, and November 1, 2017, spanning between models 20HQ, 20HR, 20K3 and 20K4. If you own one of these models, hit the source link and select your machine type from the pull-down menu, and enter in your laptop's serial number to see if your specific unit is affected by the recall.

However the potential remains and Lenovo has outlined how you can figure out if your laptop is affected and what to do to get your device fixed on its website. Nevertheless, if you own an affected model, Lenovo says you should stop using it immediately while you initiate a free inspection and fix. It promises to do this with minimal delay. Lenovo claims the problem was first noticed when three different users reported that the batteries in their Thinkpad X1 Carbons were overheating. Lenovo is offering a free service inspection program for all affected ThinkPad X1 Carbon 5th Generation laptops. It is essential that you do not use your laptop until you have verified that it is not affected, or if it is, that you return it to Lenovo.
